JUNE 11th- 13th, 2004


WHAT:The AVP Nissan Series returns to the city of San Diego to transform one of its pristine beaches into a volleyball mecca. Legends Karch Kiraly and Sinjin Smith won in 1979. If Kiraly won again, it would make it a quarter-century between wins at a venue. The city is proud to once again play host to the top 150 competitors in the sport of beach volleyball, including 16 Olympians. These premier competitors will vie for the top places in what promises to be the most compelling season yet as they gear up for the summer Olympics in Athens.

WHO: Top athletes on the men's side include 2000 Olympic Gold Medalists Eric Fonoimoana, Olympian Mike Whitmarsh and three-time Olympic Gold Medallist Karch Kiraly.

Top women's teams include undefeated Misty May & Kerri Walsh, 2000 Olympic team members Jenny Johnson-Jordan & Annett Davis, Holly McPeak.

BACKGROUND: Organized in 1983, the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour consists of more than 150 top men and women competitors in the sport of beach volleyball. This year, the AVP will send two men's and two women's teams to represent the U.S. at the Olympics in Athens, where Beach Volleyball continues to be one of the hottest sports at the Summer Games. The tour is committed to showcasing some of the world's best male and female athletes competing in one of the most exciting and demanding sports. Karch Kiraly and Mike Lambert 2004 Mens Champs fight their wayt through the semi finals. Karch Kiraly in the pink hat is one of the all time greats for professional beach volleyball. His resume for beach volleyball is below.


UNITED STATES DOMESTIC BEACH CAREER - Kiraly, who has won 144 pro beach titles, became winningest beach volleyball player of all time when he and Adam Johnson captured the 1999 Chicago Open. Kiraly broke the previous record of 139 set in 1992 by long-time rival, Sinjin Smith. The two winningest players also teamed to win 21 domestic titles (1979-82, 1984). Kiraly has won beach titles with 12 different players, including 76 with Steffes. He was the first player to earn more than $2 million in career earnings, and he became the first player to break the $3 million mark at the last tournament of the 2002 season in Las Vegas. Kiraly and Johnson won the inaugural Oldsmobile Beach Volleyball Series May 16, 1999 in Huntington Beach, Calif., a USA Volleyball-sanctioned event. Kiraly has also won the King of the Beach Invitational four times (1991-93, 1996). In 2002, was named AVP's Best Defensive Player after placing in the top three five times, including a victory at the Santa Barbara Open with partner Brent Doble. Kiraly's 2001 season was limited to two domestic events due to shoulder and leg injuries. Karch's injuries prevented him from winning a tournament in 2001, breaking a streak of fourteen straight seasons dating back to 1986. Following the 2001 season, Kiraly has 239 career final four finishes in 284 starts (84.2 percent).

The AVP Pro Volleyball Tour brings out some great athletes and some very competitive volleyball where every point counts and most games are very close with spikes being hit at over 100 MPH on the courts.

Lambert has competed in only fourth pro beach event with a fourth place finish at the 2001 Huntington Beach event with Colin Smith. He is a two-time indoor Olympian for the United States (1996 and 2000). He was a member of the United States National Team for five seasons (1995-96 and 1998-2000). He was an outside hitter on the 2000 USA Olympic team. Lambert has played professionally in Italy for Montichiari Pallavollo. He ended his career at Stanford ranked No. 2 in kills (2,083) and aces (112) and No. 3 in blocks (373). Lambert helped the Cardinal earn their first men's volleyball National Championship in 1997. He earned All-American honors in 1994, 1995 and 1997. He missed the 1996 collegiate season to be a part of the USA National Team. Lambert is a native Honolulu, Hi. He graduated from Stanford in 1997 with a degree in American Studies. Lambert enjoys playing music, surfing, hiking and snorkeling. His sisters (Debbie, Stanford and Mia, UCLA) also won National Championships in volleyball. Lambert's father (Vic) was a professional oboe player for 13 years before becoming a pilot.

HOLLY McPEAK

Holly became the first woman to break $1 Million in career earnings in 2002. McPeak is second in career wins for women behind Karolyn Kirby's 67. She ranks second in women's career tournaments played. McPeak teamed with Lisa Arce to win their 15th Gold Medal together by capturing the 2001 Hermosa Beach event. McPeak and Arce are the all-time winningest United States team in terms of earnings together ($537,950 with 15 titles, 33 podium placements and 36 'final four' finishes in 49 events). McPeak earned $91,900 in 2001 by placing on the podium eight times in 17 events. McPeak and Misty May placed fifth in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The pair won five pro beach titles in 2000. McPeak was the winningest USA men's or women's pro beach player in 2000 with $139,900 in earnings. McPeak won the 1999 Queen of the Beach title in Las Vegas. She and Nancy Reno placed fifth at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. McPeak and Lisa Arce earned the Silver Medal at the 1997 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Los Angeles and the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Goodwill Games. McPeak was the WPVA's 1991 Rookie of the Year before capturing the Most Valuable Player and Top Defensive Player honors in 1995, 1996 and 1997. McPeak graduated from UCLA in 1992. She earned three volleyball letters at the Cal-Berkeley and one at UCLA. McPeak played on the 1990 national champions at UCLA where she was named All-League and All-Tournament.

ELAINE YOUNGS

Youngs has played in more international events than domestic events. Youngs and Barbra Fontana won four events in 2001, including domestic stops in Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Manhattan Beach, Calif. The pair also won international titles in Italy and France, and placed fourth at the 2001 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Austria. Youngs and Fontana upset Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst of Australia, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Gold Medallists, in the Italian final and top-ranked Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil in the French finale. The Bronze Medallists at the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, Youngs ($137,275) and Fontana ($124,150) were the top earners for both United States men and women pro beach players in 2001. Youngs and Liz Masakayan captured three FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Gold Medals in 2000. She teamed with Masakayan to win four domestic titles in 1999. Youngs was a 1996 indoor Olympian for the United States at the Atlanta Games. She lettered four seasons in volleyball and two in basketball at UCLA. She led UCLA to the 1991 NCAA volleyball title. A four-season volleyball All-American, Youngs ranks among UCLA's career leaders in kills, digs and aces. Youngs lettered in both volleyball and basketball at El Toro High School.
