The Mission Bay Thunderboat Regatta Power Boat Regatta came to town Sept. 18 & 19th and brought with them over 100 awesome high speed powerboats of all shapes and sizes ranging from 70 MPH to nearly 200 MPH on the water. This is the NASCAR of boat racing and with boats that fly on water this is one popular yearly event in San Diego that helps raise money for Childrens Hospital

2004 Powerboat Regatta Races on Mission Bay
The Mission Bay Power Boat Regatta came to town Sept. 18 & 19th and brought with them over 100 awesome high speed powerboats of all shapes and sizes ranging from 70 MPH to nearly 200 MPH on the water. This is the NASCAR of boat racing and with boats that fly on water this is one popular yearly event in San Diego that helps raise money for Childrens Hospital.
The boats above are from Team Budweiser and are powered with T-55 L-7 turbine engines boasting 2,650 horsepower and extensively used in Chinook helicopters.

A look over Mission Bay as Miss Budweiser competes in the Saturday time trials. These "Unlimited Category" boats throw a thirty foot rooster tail more than 100 feet when making turns and going over 150 MPH. Pretty impressive for a boat that weighs over 6,500 pounds. For those boats foloowing behind visibility can be a major issue. For this reason each boat must stay in a "lane" and in addition the races are watched above by helicopter to make sure everyone starts at the right time and stays in the assigned lane areas. Photo by Mission Beach Online.com
